With banners, fliers and social media to boot, the leaders behind Goencho Avaaz has managed to create a buzz among the aam aadmi on the necessity to bring about a second liberation in Goa.

For more than a week, social media has been bombarded with several videos of young Goans pointing to ills facing the State and inviting people to participate in the public meeting on December 19 at the Mapusa taxi-stand

at 3.30 pm.

Announcements were also made in several parishes in Bardez exhorting the congregation to participate in the meeting in large numbers.

Those at the helm of Goencho Avaaz feel that time has come to liberate Goa for the second time and bring about a revolution in the State.

“Whatever our forefathers had aspired for has gone for a toss. Our so-called present day leaders (politicians) have become greedy and have taken us (people) for granted. Our call is for second liberation of Goa,” said Swapnesh Sherlekar, co-convenor of Goencho Avaaz.

Viriato Fernandes seconded him stating that the youth of Goa was facing a bleak future due to faulty policies of the government in power.

“Greed of the corporate world and politicians has ruined the State and the country. It’s time to join forces and bring a new change,” said Fernandes, who is also a co-convenor of Goencho Avaaz.

“The youth of Goa will be leading the second liberation in the state. We are showing them a way,” he added.

Backing the movement, several social groups are gearing up to mobilise support for the meeting.

Supporting the call of Goencho Avaaz, Avertino Miranda of Goa Green Brigade said that it was time for people of Goa to come out and support the cause.

“This government is not functioning for the common man but it has been pandering the rich and the big corporate houses. We need to make our voice heard,” Miranda said.

Calangute Citizens Forum will also support the call and attend the meeting in Mapusa on the Liberation Day.

“Goencho Avaaz will take up the issue of ODP which is very dear to us. We support the cause and will definitely attend the meeting,” said Premanand Divkar of Calangute Citizens Forum.

On whether Goencho Avaaz would provide a political platform to the people of Goa, co-convenor, Viriato Fernandes said nothing has been finalised although

talks were going on in that direction.

“As of now, it’s not a political movement. It may lead to something at a later stage but we do not know. We are getting calls from several people,” Fernandes said.
