MARGAO
Beware. Ensure that the gold and other valuables on the person of the dead are removed and secured. Chances are that unscrupulous elements may lay their hands on the valuables before the mortal remains are laid to rest.
The Margao police is investigating a similar case after a kin of the deceased lodged a complaint stating that gold ornaments from the blazer of the deceased went missing.
The incident had occurred at Aquem in January last after the relatives of the deceased realized that the gold ornaments, a gold chain and a finger ring, on the person went missing.
The relatives questioned the person who was engaged to organize the funeral service over the missing ornaments. He, however, claimed that the ornaments were handed over to one of the relatives, a claim rubbished by the relative.
Investigation in the case has been going on for the last 10 months, but in vain. After the relatives mounted pressure, the Margao police called the person who was engaged to organize the service for interrogation.
As the suspect turned evasive and found changing his statements, the Margao police has arrested the person.
Margao PI Ditendra Naik informed though the police has placed the suspect under arrest, the valuables have not been recovered so far.
