Traders complained of damage to their goods as water gushed into their shops at the KTC bus stand, Cuncolim after the roof sheets were either damaged or blown away by strong cyclonic winds late Friday night.
Some of the shops, including the Goa Bagaydhar which has a shop at the Cuncolim bus stand, witnessed water seepage inside the premises, as traders complained of losses.
A couple of traders directed their ire at the KTC management for the utter failure to replace the roof sheets of the Cuncolim Bus stand despite requests since the last two years.
Cuncolim Municipal acting Chairperson Anthony Vaz, who came to the bus stand, told the village talathi to take note of the damage caused to the bus stand and the losses to the traders in the natural disaster.
“The bus stand is the property belonging to the KTC. It does not belong to the Cuncolim Municipal Council. I have asked the village talathi to inspect the damage and conduct the assessment”, Anthony said.
A trader pointed out that they were shocked to find their premises and goods under water following Friday night rain. “The roof sheets were left damaged by the cyclonic winds, which resulted in water seepage and damage to our goods”, he said.
The trader pointed out that they had placed their demand for replacement of the bus stand roof sheets around a year ago when strong winds had damaged the roof, but in vain. “We only hope the KTC management will take cognizance of the situation and undertake immediate repairs given that the rains and cyclonic winds are expected to lash the state for the next two days”, he said.
The trader added: “We have already suffered losses because of the Covid pandemic. The government should assess the damage and losses, and compensate us”, he demanded.
