“Usually during the first two weeks of the month we receive around `6 crore per day in the form of revenues. However this month we have received Rs 30 crore more than we otherwise receive at this stage of the month,” a state government official said.
On November 10, the government received `14 crore, `17 crore on November 11, `16 crore on November 12, and on November 13, which was a Sunday, it was Rs `crore, taking the total collection over the four days to `54 crore.
In any other month the collection would average around `24 crore over this period. “On any given month, the government gets only 20 per cent of its monthly revenues during the first fortnight,” the official said.
The central government subsequently extended the deadline to receive taxes and other government fees in demonetised denominations to November 24 allowing those to pay their taxes using the old notes.
However, officials have said that the spike is temporary, and with several businesses suffering over the last few days, the commercial tax collections will fall before they begin to rise again.
“Several persons have paid advance tax in an effort to rid themselves of their old notes. If one factors in the slowdown in business in view of the demonetisation, tax collection will fall,” the official added.
