CANACONA: After acquiring land for the proposed indoor stadium and even tendering the Rs 21.5 crore project at Poinguinim for the National Games, the State government has now decided to drop the ambitious project on "administrative grounds".
The project floated by former sports minister and ex-Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar has been scrapped "as it was not found to be feasible."
Sports Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar provided a reply on Wednesday to Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes in a starred question in the ongoing Assembly on the situation of sports grounds in Canacona constituency. Fernandes had sought to know the number of sports grounds in
Canacona Constituency, if any proposals were pending and reasons for not executing the work in the stipulated time.
In his reply to Fernandes, Ajgaonkar said, "The proposal to construct an Indoor Stadium at Poinguinim was tendered for an amount of Rs 21,50,34,195.54. However, the bid of the lowest agency was beyond the acceptance limit of Department and the tendered being called for the first time, it was proposed to retender the work."
"Meantime, (the) Government has decided to drop this project on Administrative Grounds as it was not found to be feasible," stated Ajgaonkar.
Incidentally, the issue about the proposed indoor stadium had been debated at a recent gram sabha in Poinguinim.
The residents had even passed a resolution asking the government to return the acquired land to the panchayat, if it did not intend to construct the indoor stadium planned and tendered for the upcoming National Games.
Tawadkar had claimed that the indoor stadium was one of his pet projects for the people of Canacona taluka. He had unveiled the entire project and had even laid the foundation stone a few months before the State went to assembly polls.
During an elaborate presentation, Tawadkar had said that wrestling and archery were the games proposed at Poinguinim's indoor stadium during the National Games, adding that the stadium would be completed within 365 days of laying the foundation stone on December 8, 2016.
The indoor stadium was to have been constructed on 19,534.66 sq mtrs of land, with a built-up area of 3,260 sq mtrs, with spectators gallery and accommodation for VIPs, athletes and officials.
The stadium was also planned with an open space of 16,800 sq mtrs to park a minimum of 70 vehicles, while other sports which were also proposed at the venue in future had included indoor and outdoor facilities like wrestling, badminton, table tennis, judo, taekwando, cricket and football.
