Affirming that the BJP-led government has failed to provide basic facilities to women, Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) on Friday said such government has no right to be in power and should resign.
“The government of the day should work for the people. If they cannot deliver then they should resign from the government. The Goa Forward Party and other allies of the government should also resign,” said Adv Roshan Abhay Samant, President of State Mahila Mandal of GSM.
The GSM state mahila mandal president was addressing a news conference along with newly elected president of GSM Mapusa Mahila Mandal, Atula Belekar, and other executive members in Mapusa.
Samant said there were several cases of thefts of mangalsutra and other atrocities reported against women but the police were hardly bothered. “Our government is in sleep mode. The police very well know that no one will question them,” she said.
She said Mapusa municipal market was a popular market world over and therefore the facilities available in the market should have also been the best.
“On the contrary, we find the toilet facility provided in the market in a very sorry state of affairs. One toilet has not been functioning for last several months as the septic tank has failed. Another toilet near the pottery market is also in poor state,” Samant
pointed out.
“The condition is worse particularly for women. There are several poor women making a living by selling vegetables and other items in the market. Where will they go? In fact for now women can use only one toilet in the Mapusa fish market,” she added.
She further said Mapusa municipal market was a big market and the Mapusa Municipal Council was well off when it came to generating income for the civic body.
“It’s very sad that such a big council in Mapusa cannot provide basic facility like toilets for women in the city market,” she said.
The GSM state mahila mandal president further said this government was building bridges and widening
roads but failed to provide basic facilities like toilets to
its people.
Samant said GSM was a new party and will study and take up several other issues affecting the people of Mapusa in future.
She said the party will field a candidate in the Mapusa by-poll as soon as the election is declared.
“Election in Mapusa was unfortunate due to death of the local MLA but the other two elections have been forced upon us,” she said.
