Sources informed that the land transfer was completed two days ago, marking a major milestone in the long-pending effort to establish a permanent campus for IIT-Goa.
The institute has been functioning from a temporary campus at the Goa Engineering College (GEC), Farmagudi, since its establishment in 2016.
Sources said the additional private land is required to ensure the campus has adequate space for future academic blocks, research facilities, student hostels, faculty housing, sports infrastructure and other amenities envisaged under the institute's master plan.
The State government had earlier identified land at Farmagudi for the project after the Union Ministry of Education relaxed its earlier requirement of 10 lakh square metres for an IIT campus. The Centre subsequently agreed that a campus on around 4.5 lakh square metres would be adequate, paving the way for the project to move forward. The Cabinet, last month, granted its nod for the transfer of the land.
With the transfer of government land now completed, the process of acquiring the remaining private land is expected to begin shortly. Officials indicated that the acquisition will help create a contiguous land parcel for the permanent campus.
