Accusing the BJP of having misused government machinery to pressurise voters, NCP State President and former minister Jose Philip D'Souza on Friday said that the elections turned out to be a situation where the Government machinery was on one side while candidates and voters were on the other side.
“There has been a lot of problems and yet, voters came out to exercise their franchise amid rising Covid cases, which indicates their will and love for candidates,” said D’Souza, as he and his wife, Nenny, who is a candidate in elections at Mangor, went to the St Theresa School to cast their votes.
“I have seen that the entire government machinery is being misused by the ruling party and while the police and other authorities of the government machinery were on one side, the candidates and voters were on the other side.
“Many of my supporters are either being threatened or being taken to the police station on basis of false complains and most of their names had already been in the police station much in advance.”
“This only indicates that the ruling party is afraid of the opposition and is trying everything possible to reduce votes of opposition candidates," said D’Souza.
Meanwhile, Nenny expressed confidence of her victory in Ward 17.
"The good turnout, despite all odds, only shows their love for my brother-in-law late Pascoal D’Souza, who had represented them as councillor. I am sure people will elect me so that I can continue the legacy of late Pascoal for the people he looked upon as his family," she said.
