Govt moves bill to set up ‘public varsities’

PANAJI
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday introduced a bill in the Goa legislative assembly which seeks to enable the government to establish and incorporate ‘public universities’ in Goa for implementing the goals of National Education Policy 2020.

The Goa Public Universities Bill, 2025, was introduced so as to create new multi-disciplinary universities to impart quality and industry-relevant world-class higher education and also to transform higher education institutions into multidisciplinary institutions.

The Goa Public Universities Bill, 2025 also provides for financing the universities from the State’s consolidated fund but does not quantify the extent of financing.

The financial memorandum to the bill however states that a provision for Rs 25 crore is to be made for expenses towards establishing the Public Universities in Goa for the “initial stage.”

It is expected to come up for consideration on Monday or Tuesday when it will be discussed threadbare in the House.
