Minister for PWD Sudin Dhavalikar said the government is working on a concept to provide water tanks to every household and the public can pay for the tanks in water bills, to address the issue of water supply.
Dhavalikar was speaking at a function organised by Madhavrao Dhavalikar Trust to distribute fertilisers to farmers from Kundaim. Sarpanch Ramu Naik, Deputy Sarpanch Mohan Gawade, Silpa Kuvelkar, Sanchita Parwar, Vishwas Phadate and Lakshaman Joshi were present.
Dhavalikar said agricultural activities are not affordable for farmers and some have even given up farming. “Some do farming cause they love doing it. Hence, the government and NGOs provide aid to encourage them,” he said.
Referring to water scarcity problem in some regions, Dhavalikar said the government is planning to distribute water tanks to every household. “The consumers can pay for these water tanks in their bills. It will be easy for them. They will be able to store water and there will be no issue pertaining to water,” he added.
He further said water treatment plants, which are under completion, once commissioned will help to cater to the needs of the public. “To resolve the issue of water shortage in Ponda and surrounding areas, we have decided to get water from the Selaulim dam from the pipeline passing from Salcete,” he said.
According to Dhavalikar, the defunct pipeline passing from Borim bridge will be put to use. “Presently, this pipeline is not functioning. Earlier, water from Ponda was supplied from this pipeline to Loutulim. Now, it’s defunct as Loutulim and other areas get water from Selaulim. We will make use of this pipeline,” he said.
He said there is surplus water in South Goa and it can be utilised for other areas, where there is a shortage.
