Govt plans to spend money on Liberation events under fire

The Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) on Saturday objected to the State Government’s plans to spend an estimated Rs 100 crore on events around the year to celebrate the 60th celebration of Goa’s liberation.

Addressing a news conference at Vasco, GSM Youth President Nitin Faldesai along with other members said the State government should utilise the funds on development projects, healthcare infrastructure, educational facilities, resolving issues of seafarers and clearing pending payments and perks of government officers and workers.

“Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has openly said he will seek Rs 100 crore from the Centre for events to celebrate the 60 years of Goa’s liberation.”

“While we respect and value freedom fighters who fought for the cause of Goa’s Liberation, we don’t understand why there is a need to seeks funds from the Centre and carry out the celebrations when the economic and financial state of Goa is in bad shape and especially during the pandemic.”

Faldesai said the money could be used to give laptops and phones to poor students who can’t afford gadgets while the State is using online mode for education.

“The money could be used for development works which are pending for want of finance, improving health infrastructure and helping people financially affected by the pandemic.”

“This will be the real celebrations of 60 years of Goa Liberation when the government helps Goans and provides better infrastructure for their well-being,” said Faldesai.
