Margao MLA and Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Saturday said the real tribute to devoted and selfless social worker Narayan Pai Fondekar will be to continue with his social work.
Kamat said Fondekar was a living institution and the young generation should take inspiration from his work. His contribution to Margao crematorium is irreplaceable, he added. The Margao MLA was speaking at a condolence meeting held in the city here on Saturday to pay respect to the former Vice-chairperson of Margao Municipal Council and social worker.
Paying his tributes, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said that Fondekar’s demise has created a big void in various institutions he was associated with. “It is important that Nana’s work is carried forward and I commit my full support to those who come forward to shoulder the responsibility, Sardesai stated.
Former Chairperson of MMC Ajit Hegde recalled his long association with Nana and said he had a close resemblance to the character of “Narayan” depicted in “Vyakti aani Valli” by famous Marathi writer P L Deshpande.
President of Mathgramastha Hindu Sabha Pandurang alias Bhai Naik said that a vacuum is created in the Sabha and added that three persons will be needed to take on the responsibility of Fondekar.
Prashant Ghodge of Solid Party Trust requested that a road near Pai Fondekar house in Comba be named after the latter.
Councillor Dorris Texeira, Narayan Mauzo, Kamaxi Saunsthan President Umesh Kamat, Vaikunth Pai Fondekar of MHS Kala Vibhag, Ex-Councillor Damodar Shirodkar, family associate Mahesh Damodar Naik, Municipal Union General Secretary Anil Shirodkar, family member Shekhar Pai Fondekar also spoke and paid homage to Fondekar.
The Shradhanjali Sabha commenced by observing one-minute silence to pay respect to the departed soul. Niece of Fondekar delivered the vote of thanks while Vishal Pai Cacode compered the meeting.
