The seafarers pension scheme which was introduced by the Manohar Parrikar government after the 2012 Assembly election and run by the office of the NRI Commissioner, is now proposed to be integrated with the Dayanand Social Security Scheme (DSSS).
The proposal has gone to the government for integration of the pension scheme into the DSSS scheme, even as retired seafarers and widows have complained that they have not received their pension amounting to Rs 2,500 for the month of July. Reports also spoke about the delay in processing fresh applications received from retired seafarers and widows.
It could not be ascertained whether the NRI Commissioner has proposed to the government to integrate the scheme with the DSSS due to functional issues in managing the scheme or the fact that the scheme is due to end by October 3 this year.
NRI Director Anthony D’Souza said various functional issues have come to the fore in the management of the seafarers scheme over the years. “The scheme is funded under the GAD though the office of NRI Commissioner certifies the seafarers and the beneficiaries. The scheme is scheduled to end in October this year and the NRI office has proposed integration of the scheme with the DSSS for better management,” he said.
On the delay in disbursing the pension for the month of July, Anthony said he has checked up with his officials and it has come to light that the payment is stuck at the office of the Accounts.
“All is clear from our side and the issue is pending at the Accounts department,” he said.
