The Goa government has taken an initiative -- STEMI Goa -- to intervene and stem deaths caused by cardiac arrests (heart attacks), which aims at hand holding the recovery to health of those who have survived heart attacks.
According to the Health Minister, the initiative of the State government hopes to reduce the number of deaths caused by cardiac arrest.
“With our STEMI Goa initiative, we hope to reduce the number of deaths in our state caused by cardiac arrest," the health minister said, adding that the goal is to ensure healthy recovery for every patient who has suffered a cardiac arrest.
"The STEMI initiative is a critical step in that direction,” the minister said, adding that Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the world’s leading cause of death and accounts for as many as 18.6 million deaths each year.
The health minister said it is critical to follow a healthy lifestyle and keep in shape because heart attacks are common.
The initiative aims at taking the best health practices and modern technology to all parts of the State using the hub and spoke model with selected peripheral institutes being the spokes, namely CHC Pernem, PHC Sankhali, North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa, CHC Valpoi, PHC Dharbandora, Sub District Hospital, Ponda, PHC Curchorem, Sub District Hospital, Chicalim, Hospicio Hospital, Margao, CHC Canacona, PHC Aldona and UHC Panaji with the central / apex tertiary hospital-Goa Medical College & Hospital being the Hub of the wheel. The initiative has its footprint on approximately 1,500 patients a year.
