Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the setting up of a Goa State Mining Corporation in a bid to restart the long-stalled mining operations in Goa as well as that the state government will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd (MECL), a Government of India Enterprise to “identify potential mining sites.”
Presenting the state budget for the upcoming financial year, Sawant also promised to restart sand mining and stone quarrying through streamlining procedures.
“To restart mining I propose to set up a Goa State Mining Corporation,” Sawant said.
When asked later at the press conference what it would mean in real terms for the mining industry, Sawant remained vague claiming that government efforts are on to restart mining and that the corporation was a step in that direction.
