Govt to take onus of transporting food grain to fair price shops

Civil Supplies dept calls for transportation bids

PANAJI
The State government through the Civil Supplies Department will soon take the onus of transporting allotted foodgrain to the fair price shops through the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) across Goa.

A tender floated by the department calls for bids for Transportation as well as appointment of an agency to execute the food grains deliver to the door step of fair price shops from the taluka-level godowns.

Until now, lifting their quota of stocks from the godown to their fair price shops was the responsibility of the owners. They also had to bear the cost of this transportation, a major reason that affected their profits and reflected on the poor services dished out to the end-beneficiary of the PDS.

Recently, the All Goa Consumer Co-operative Society and the Fair Price Shop Owners Association had threatened not to lift the stocks for November citing losses due to transportation and labour costs.

Goa has a total of 5-odd lakh people covered under the PDS system governed by the National Food Security Act.
