Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phaldesai has on Thursday said that the government will strengthen existing schemes for the welfare of senior citizens as he recognized the yeoman service rendered by the elders to the society.

Given that the state is heading for the Assembly election, the Minister said that no new schemes will be introduced for the moment, saying the government will strengthen the existing schemes.

Phaldesai was addressing senior citizens on the occasion of International Elders’ Day organised by the Social welfare department in the city here on Thursday.

The Minister further said that process to apply for senior citizens schemes is simple, pointing out that no affidavit is required to apply for the schemes.

On the occasion, the Social Welfare department felicitated Senior Citizens in Margao for their contribution to the society. Health and Assessment Camps were organised on the occasion.

The programme included medical and eye check-up camps, along with an assessment camp aimed at addressing the healthcare and welfare needs of senior citizens. Social Welfare Minister Subhash

Phal Dessai and Minister Ulhas Tuenkar were present at the programme.

Meanwhile, the All Goa Senior Citizens Federation held World Elders’ Day celebrations cum Suraksha Bhandan at the Ravindra bhavan, Margao on Thursday.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas and Velim MLA Cruz Silva underscored the need for the government to protect the interests of senior citizens.
