The decision to appoint a salvage company to begin operations to remove the highly dangerous and combustible naphtha from the chemical tanker MT Nu Shi Nalini grounded a few hundred meters off Marivel beach in Dona Paula was deferred yet again even as the fishing community and residents in the area continued to be living in fear.
A day after the Mormugao Port Trust authorities admitted to the Bombay High Court the imminent danger of the ship cracking at its bottom, the State administration postponed the deadline to appoint a firm to salvage the tanker to tentatively Monday.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said: “The contractor is likely to be finalised on Monday and will be on-board to shift the naphtha. The govt is very much serious and concerned about the issue.”
“Naphtha will be shifted at the earliest, that is the priority now,” Sawant added. The State government has appointed a five-member committee comprising three officials appointed by the Director General (Shipping), the chairman of MPT and the Chief Secretary of Goa, Parimal Rai to select the firm which will conduct the salvage operation.
