Charging Prime Minister Narendra Modi for trying to misguide the people of Goa and India on Captain Viriato’s remarks on the Indian Constitution, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Patkar has said the Prime Minister should explain to Goans on his 2014 election promise to give special status to the people of Goa.

The GPCC asked Chief Minister Pramod Sawant not to twist the words to create a sensation, but to answer on the burning issues plaguing the people of Goa.

“During his 2014 Lok Sabha speech, Modi had promised the people of Goa to give special status to the state if elected. This promise has not been fulfilled till date. The Prime Minister and the Chief Minister had made several promises to the people of Goa, including resumption of mining, but the promises have all remained on paper”, Patkar added.

Directing his tirade at Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Patkar said he feels pity for Kamat for going to the Election Commission to file a complaint as he had betrayed the Constitution by defecting from the Congress to the BJP. “How can you call Captain Viriato an anti-national when he has sacrificed his life to save the country. Before saying anything against Viriato, these BJP leaders should go and stay for a day at the country’s border. The Congress party and the leaders are all committed to protect  the Constitution”, Patkar added.
