Speaking his mind on the issue of grand alliance in Goa to defeat the BJP in the coming election, GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro said the proponents of the Alliance should not just talk for the sake of talking, but should be practical.
Trying to downplay the issue when the idea of Alliance has caught the imagination of the party former ministers and MLAs, Faleiro sought to know how many parties were there in Goa which could be considered for an Alliance for the 2017 election. Faleiro quipped, “We have the regional parties, the MGP and the GVP, both of whom are honeymooning with the BJP. Then, there are some independent MLAs, who are also supporting the BJP government. How many parties and MLAs are left to form the so called alliance”.
Responding to a question on how many Congress MLAs were presently involved with the organization, Faleiro said that those who want to leave the party are free to do so.
On the process of grooming the youth leadership and the question of giving 50 per cent tickets to new faces, Faleiro said the Zilla Panchayat election had thrown up new faces in Nuvem and Cuncolim in Wilfred de Sa and Clafacio Dias respectively. “In Nuvem, Wilfred has proved himself through his performance. Similarly, Clafacio had proved himself in the Zilla election. They will be certainly considered for party tickets at the time of election”, Faleiro asserted.
Meanwhile, gearing up for the Oath of Tolerance programme at the historic Lohia Maidan, Margao on Saturday, the Congress is bracing up to use the platform as a launching pad to take the party to the nook and corner of the state ahead of the 2017 Assembly election, with GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro saying the party will witness a sea change in the next one month.
Faleiro also announced that a lot of new faces will embrace the Congress en masse, adding that the ongoing organizational process of putting committees in every bloc will be completed within a month.
Addressing the media in the presence of MLAs, Digambar Kamat, Babu Kavlekar, Reginaldo Lourenco, former minister Babu Azgaonkar and party office bearers, Faleiro said the oath of tolerance scheduled on Saturday at the Lohia Maidan will send a message from the smallest State to the country against intolerance. “We Goans are secular in nature. But, even then there were instances of intolerance in the State such as the artificial beef shortage and the sky rocketing beef prices. We in Goa are facing the brunt of intolerance”, he said.
Accusing the BJP of trying to polarise the nation, Faleiro said those who polarise the society on communal lines and spread hatred have no right to continue in power. “The politics of division has to stop. Bihar has shown the way by rejecting the politics of polarisation and culture of hatred”, he said.
He said the Lohia Maidan meeting proposes to administer the oath of tolerance so as to cherish, safeguard and upkeep the principle of unity, peace, compassion and brotherhood amongst the citizenry.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, who has been appointed the convenor of the oath taking programme exuded confidence that people will turn up in large numbers. He further said that many youth and new faces will join the party on that day on the occasion.
