Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE) leaders paid tribute to late Matanhy Saldanha on his 78th birth anniversary in Cansaulim, recalling his contributions to Goa’s fishing community.
Speaking to the media, GRE President Agnelo Rodrigues said “Goa’s traditional fishers would never forget Matanhy Saldanha and his lifelong sacrifices for the fishing community. Saldanha had dedicated his life to fighting for the rights, dignity and welfare of traditional fishers, and that GRE would continue his legacy.”
GRE General Secretary Olencio Simoes urged the government to prioritise the welfare of traditional fishers rather than focus disproportionately on aquaculture and fish farming. “The rights, livelihoods and interests of traditional fishing communities must remain central to the state’s fisheries policies,” Simoes said.
Simoes called for strict enforcement of existing fishing laws and action against illegal fishing practices, particularly the use of Maple boats and LED lights for fishing. He said such practices threatened the livelihoods of traditional fishers and called for effective monitoring to ensure sustainable fishing.
He also demanded an increase in fuel subsidies for traditional fishers, citing rising operational costs and the financial burden on fishing families.
GRE reiterated its commitment to upholding Matanhy Saldanha’s ideals and continuing its efforts to protect traditional fishers, promote sustainable fisheries and preserve Goa’s marine and coastal environment.
