Revenue Minister Jennifer Monserrate lent her ears to MLAs of Saxtti as they voiced their grievances pertaining to stinking toilets in the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex, the inadequate compensation to victims of natural calamities and the pending revenue cases in the Margao revenue courts.
During her first ever visit to the South District Collectorate after taking over the Revenue Ministry, Jennifer stepped into the District Collectorate on Monday morning, only to be flooded with grievances from South leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat and MLAs Luizinho Faleiro, Churchill Alemao and Wilfred D’Sa.
The local MLAs drew the attention of the Revenue Minister to the stinking toilets in the Collectorate and the hardships faced by visitors.
The MLAs also raised the issue of the inadequate compensation paid to victims of natural calamities and urged the Minister to revise the rates.
After coming out of the meeting with the minister, Leader of the Opposition said the MLAs told the minister that the compensation was not only paid after a period of two-three months, but the amount of Rs 2000 was inadequate.
“The MLAs have asked the Minister to fix a minimum compensation of Rs 5000. We have also requested for an interim relief as assessment takes a long time,”
Kamat said.
Kamat further pointed out that the MLAs made a strong case before the minister to work out a system wherein a widow will not be required to appear before the Deputy Collector every now and then for signing of sale deeds.
“There ought to be a mechanism wherein the widow’s presence is required only for signing one sale deed and not in all cases. Similarly, the widows, who are staying abroad, need not come to the Consulate to sign the Power of Attorney every now and then,” Kamat added.
