Day 1 of the four-day lockdown brought the otherwise bustling port town to a standstill as most shops were closed and roads were virtually deserted.
While the main Vasco market was closed, a few grocery outlets remained open in certain areas.
Most shops in the city remained closed while some vendors at the fruit and vegetable market were open but did not receive many customers. The Vasco fish market was open and only a few people were seen buying fish.
There was no crowd at any of the markets as most people had already stocked up on their provisions and did not move out of their houses.
The fear of rapidly rising Covid cases and related deaths may also have played a role in forcing people to remain at home.
The state administration had barricaded various locations and police teams stopped people from moving around unnecessarily.
While pharmacies, banks and petrol pumps remained open, the police and state administration ensured that non-essential shops closed shutters after opening for a short time.
Police teams were seen patrolling various areas people found without masks were fined.
Some restaurants remained open for delivery of food through Swiggy and Zomato but not many delivery boys were seen around, indicating that the food delivery business may have also been affected.
Most roads in Vasco wore a deserted look and only a few vehicles were seen moving around on Friday
Wine outlets open,
later made to shut
VASCO: While essential stores were allowed to remain open during the lockdown, a few liquor wholesalers and wine stores had kept their shops open during the day.
However, the authorities along with the police later ordered the wine shops to shut down.
Many wine store owners said that their wine stores had other items like masala packets, pickles and other items which could be categorised as dry provisions under the essential groceries, but authorities ordered the wine shops and liquor wholesalers to close down the shops.
