GRLA backs parents’ protest against April academic year, calls for seminar on NEP

MARGAO
The Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan has extended its support to the protests staged by the parents and students at the Lohia Maidan, Margao, on Sunday demanded scrapping of the decision to start the academic year from April 7.

The Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan has demanded a full day seminar on the New Educational Policy (NEP). Saying the NEP is student and teacher centric, and therefore suggestions must be taken from the students, teachers, NGOs and school managements, and the Education Department, GRLA President Kennedy Afonso said the government should try to listen to the suggestions of the stake holders and then act accordingly.

“The NEP is not a top down model where the Education Department used to impose any thing on the students, parents, teachers and school management. That time is gone.  The NEP is bottom up policy, and therefore the reforms for changes in the education system must come from students, teachers and school management. The Education Department role is to see if the suggestions fit into the frame work provided by the NEP, and implement them,” he said.

He said the three language policy which has been decided for Goa must also be discussed thread bare. “The issue of Devanagari and Roman Script Konkani must be one of the topics that need to be discussed in the seminar. Students find Devanagari Script very difficult to learn, and therefore, Roman Script Konkani should be introduced into schools under the NEP,” he said.
