There has been a growing demand for all private clinics to be reopened in the port town, following a further removal of restrictions as part of the nationwide Unlock 4.0.
Many clinics in Vasco had been closed ever since Mormugao taluka had been hit by a large number of Covid cases.
Some clinics have recently opened up as part of Unlock 4.0, but most private clinics continue to be shut down since March, forcing people to visit hospitals for ailments or medical emergencies.
"Many people have their own family doctors but if the doctors are not available, we are forced to go to another doctor in a different area, but the new doctor may not know the case history of the patient’s ailments,” said Girish Borker.
“Sometimes, people are forced to visit a hospital, but this causes fear among patients who may not feel as calm and relaxed as when they visit their family doctor.”
“While we do understand that doctors also don't want to risk their lives, but as the city opens up, the doctors can also reopen their clinics. They may opt for preventive measures like sanitisers or taking up only a few patients, but the doctors and private clinics must restart," said Borker.
Another resident, Ramdas Parab, said doctors could also allow consultation on prior appointment.
"There are many clinics and most people are accustomed to going to only one doctor who has been treating patients and their families for years. Sometimes, the reassuring look of the doctor and his encouraging words can be immensely beneficial to a patient, while the thought of visiting an unknown doctor can cause anxiety to patients.”
“Sometimes, medicines given by one doctor may differ from others and hence, doctors should consider reopening their clinics in the wider public interest," said Parab.
