It’s not just Sonsoddo that Goa’s civic authorities are struggling to deal with ridding mounds of garbage accumulated over decades in spaces they themselves once used to dump waste produced in their jurisdictions.
According to an October report compiled by the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Goa’s cities and towns have eleven spots where thousands of cubic meters of garbage is lying in the form of artificial mountains.”There are 12 legacy dumps in the State of Goa, four of these in the capital city of Panaji, within the jurisdiction of the Corporation of the City of Panaji,” the report of the GSPCB said.
Mormugao, Mapusa, Bicholim, Pernem, Canacona and Cuncolim Municipal Council have one ‘legacy dump’ each, the report said.
One such legacy garbage dump is also recorded in Shiroda village panchayat jurisdiction in Ponda taluka, the GSPCB report said.
According to the report, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is currently overlooking the bio-remediation of these legacy dumps.
As per the detailed annexure of the report, Sonsoddo in Margao has around 2.3 lakh cubic meters of garbage.
The four sites in the jurisdiction of CCP area identified by the report are in Curca, Campal, Patto and near the Heera petrol pump. These four sites have garbage heaps aggregating some 20,000 cubic meters of waste.
A site in the juridiction of Mapusa municipal area has 127 cubic meters of garbage, while at Sada in the jurisdiction of the Mormugoa Municipal Council, a mound of 83,000 cubic meters of garbage lies in a mound opposite the MPT Hospital, the report adds.
