Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress president Pratima Coutino on Sunday demanded severe punishment for rape accused saying they should
be prosecuted and sentenced to death in public places.
Condemning the rape and murder of the young veterinarian in Hyderabad who was found dead with her body partially burnt under Chatanpally bridge in Shadnagar on Thursday morning, she said, safety of women is the need of hour.
“Implement strict laws for rape and have a fast trial to give capital punishment. Hang him openly. Give a message that the punishment is so fearful it will deter all such evil people,” Coutinho said.
“If the government can’t prosecute rapists, hand them over to the public,” she added.
Coutinho said Goa is also not safe for girls and demanded that night patrolling be increased to make it safe for women.
Coutinho also demanded separate buses for women from Mapusa to Panaji and other routes as there have been several complaints of women’s being abused in buses during rush hours.
Coutinho also condemned Andra Pradesh Home Minister statement that the victim should have contacted the police rather than calling her sister, calling it insensitive.
