GSPCB imposes Rs 2.77cr fine on 31 villas in Anjuna

The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has imposed Rs 2.77 crore fine towards environmental compensation to Vianaar Construction Pvt Ltd (La Olalian), owner of 31 villas, located at Sebastian Vaddo, Anjuna for operating without establishing sewage treatment plant and consent.

The Board has issued show cause notice to the firm on February 12 asking as “why you should not pay environmental compensation of Rs 2,77,25,000 to the Board for violation under Air and Water pollution Act”.

The Board has also observed that the villas are not registered with the Tourism Department despite being put for tourism commercial use.

In a notice issued, the Board has asked the unit/ establishment to pay penalty under the Polluter Pays Principal to the Board for the aforesaid violations.

The Board found that the units were operating without the valid Consent to Operate of the Board as required under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and as the establishment/ unit was being operated without a Sewage Treatment Plant.
