MAPUSA
The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) jointly conducted an enforcement drive in Mapusa market on Thursday, penalising six vendors and establishments and imposing fines totalling Rs 17,500 for the sale and use of banned single-use plastics. The drive, which began around noon, was part of the State-led BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week (November 1-7), held under the Day 5 theme, ‘Say No to Single-Use Plastics’. Officials inspected shops and commercial establishments and confiscated prohibited plastic items.
Ahead of Diwali, joint teams also inspected Narkasur effigy-making sites within the MMC jurisdiction to ensure plastic was not used in their construction. The move aimed to prevent the release of toxic fumes and generation of non-biodegradable waste from burning plastic along with the effigies.
Artisans and youth groups were encouraged to use traditional, environment-friendly materials. The initiative aims to curb plastic pollution and promote responsible commercial activities and festive celebrations through sustained enforcement and
public cooperation.
