The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has directed the closure of a poultry unit operating at Konadi-Corgao in Pernem Taluka.

Acting upon a complaint from a resident of Corgao on April 22, GSPCB officials conducted a site inspection on May 9 and observed serious violations.

The unit was found to be operating without obtaining the mandatory Consent to Operate under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.

The inspection revealed instances of foul odour, improper waste disposal, and environmental pollution, as highlighted in the complaint.

Consequently, the GSPCB, through its Member Secretary Sanjeev Joglekar, issued closure orders under Section 33(A) of the Water Act and Section 31(A) of the Air Act, directing the unit to immediately stop all operations until proper consents are obtained.

Copies of the closure directions have also been forwarded to the Pernem deputy collector, who has been instructed to ensure the immediate sealing and stoppage of operations of the poultry unit and to submit a compliance report.
