The Goa University on Thursday said it has withdrawn three controversial advertisements released by it in March for recruiting teaching staff.
The advertisements had raised a big controversy in the State as it had purportedly relaxed domicile requirements for candidates to be eligible, one of the conditions that ensures locals are assured recruitment.
A press note issued by the Goa University Registrar on Friday said: “The Goa University has withdrawn the three advertisements released on 8th March, 2019 for recruitment of teaching positions vis. 1. For Backlog vacancies 2. For Shortfall vacancies 3. For Regular vacancies.”
The University authorities dropping the domicile clause in the recruitment advertisement had generated a lot of heat in Goa’s political circles after Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai had publicly lambasted the varsity and warned that his Goa Forward Party will be forced to “weaponise Goa’s youth” if such discrimination against locals continues in the job market.
The statement made by Sardesai stirred a row with the Opposition Congress demanding an apology from him and the party’s youth wing also filing a complaint demanding that he be booked under the sedition law as it was clearly public display of the intention to “wage war” against the government.
The Congress however distanced itself from the youth wing’s move after it realised that the party has nationally promised to repeal the sedition law in its manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
At the government level, Sardesai had broached the subject with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and reports said the government would seek an explanation from the University authorities.
After the controversy erupted the Governor, Mridula Sinha is said to have sought a report from the University authorities on the recruitment issue.
The Goa University is an autonomous body with the Governor of Goa as its Chancellor. It however receives funds from the State and is accountable to the Goa legislative assembly.
