Guirim locals have opposed STP for Porvorim: Salgaonkar

PORVORIM: Finding a site to set up the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to cater to Porvorim constituency has now become more difficult than expected.

Speaking along the sidelines of a function in Nerul, Housing Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar said residents of Guirim have opposed the government’s move to set up the STP for Porvorim constituency at Guirim.

“Authorities were trying to identify land at Guirim after residents of Mapusa had opposed the construction of the STP for Porvorim constituency in their area.” “There are many open spaces in Porvorim constituency, particularly at Salvaodor-do-Mundo and Socorro. The Sewage and Infrastructure Development Corporation Goa Ltd (SIDCGL) should construct the STP in Porvorim constituency, instead of looking out for places in other constituencies,” Salgaonkar added. The minister said the government has sanctioned a 20-MLD water treatment plant at Guirim and the PWD has been looking out for 50,000 square metres of land to set up this plant. This plant will cater to water requirement of Saligao and a part of Calangute constituency.” “Hence, there is no question of allowing any sewage treatment plant in the vicinity of water treatment plant at Guirim. I am with the people of Guirim on this issue,” said Salgaonkar.
