The Department of Women’s Studies at the Goa University (GU) has planned to celebrate women’s day in a creative way: with an inter-college competition with 11 innovative tech-related events that celebrate women.
The Department, along with the State Resource Center for Women (SRCW), are organising “Making Equality a Reality” or MEAR today at the Department of Women’s Studies from 9 am to 5 pm.
Besides this, the department will also be releasing a magazine called “MEAR” to highlight the department’s 30 year journey.
The 11 tech-themed events are called Maa, You Can Do It!, Making Of Sculpture Gender Equality, Techie for Change, MLA (Mock Legislative Assembly), STEMinist, Matka Painting Competition (Women And Livelihood), Street Play Technovation for Gender Equality, Creative Corner, Stand up Comedy, App to Bridge the Gap, and Khich MEAR Photo.
Maa, You Can Do It, is a competition where students need to simplify technology for their moms, and create a video explaining a simple technology that will be useful to mom in her day-to-day life in a five minute video.
Every step in the teaching of technology is to be incorporated in the final video.
In “Technovation for Gender Equality,” participants have to think of a product that in some way contributes to bridging the gender gap and build a model on the same.
“For example: you can say you built a slipper that you can fling at an attacker which has a boomerang technology; such that it hits your attacker and comes back and places itself on your foot,” says the brochure.
For the competition “App to Bridge the Gap”, participants need to come up with a creative solution- or utility-based app that will benefit women and reduce the gender gap.
And for “STEMinist”, participants will have to use STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths to build a fictional model to put an end to inequality.
“The Department of Women’s Studies, Goa University pays tribute to women who have struggled for equality by having an inter-collegiate festival,” reads the brochure which reminds participants of the struggle of women through the ages.
