Those who have been residents of Goa for the past five years or more can make new cards to avail of government health insurance under the “Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana” (DDSSY) scheme until March 2020. New card registrations are now open, consultant for DDSSY, Dr BV Pai said on Thursday.

Renewal of existing cards can be done until the end of March 2019. “34,000 cards are yet to be renewed,” said Pai.

Renewal and new registrations can be done at Goa Electronics Limited (GEL) centers.

In more good news for those who have the insurance, the scheme has been amended to include general medicines up to Rs 15,000.

Pai said that up to February 28, all payments under the scheme have been released to empaneled hospitals. The remaining funds will be released in the next two days.

Since the launch of the scheme in 2016, 14,000 people have benefited. 52 hospitals in the state and 9 outside the state have been empaneled under the scheme. 447 procedures are included in the scheme.

Though the scheme was initially implemented by insurance companies, from June 2018 it was handled directly by the government through a Third Party Administrator (TPA.) Registration for new cards had been stopped for several months, but has now been re-opened.
