Bishop Thomas Thennatt (65) of Gwalior died in a road mishap while returning from an official function in Gwalior late Friday evening.
According to a statement by Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) Secretary General Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, the incident took place as Bishop Thennatt was returning to the Bishop’s House in Gwalior after an annual function in a school under the archdiocese.
The vehicle he was travelling skidded off and overturned. Bishop Thennatt suffered severe head injury and was rushed to the nearest hospital and thereafter to St Joseph Hospital, Gwalior, where he was declared dead.
Bishop Mascarenhas later added that the funeral of late Bishop Thennatt will be held at St Paul’s Church Morar, Gwalior on
December 18 at 11 am.
Bishop Thennatt was born on November 26, 1953 and was ordained a priest on October 21, 1978.
Pope Francis appointed him bishop of Gwalior on October 18, 2016 and he was ordained Bishop of Gwalior on January 8, 2017.
According to reports, Bishop Thennatt was the first member of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate (SAC), popularly known as Pallotines, to become a bishop in India. The Pallotines have their presence in the Goa Archdiocese at Badem, Mormugao, Pernem, Sarzora and Tormas in Goa and Silvasa (Dadra and Nagar Haveli).
“In him we have lost a true shepherd and a great human being. We entrust our beloved Bishop Thennatt into the hands of the Lord and pray to him to receive him in His loving arms.”
“We pray for comfort and consolation for the priests, religious and faithful of the Diocese of Gwalior in this moment of immense tragedy,” Bishop Mascarenhas stated.
