Goa Pradesh Congress party spokesperson Urfan Mulla has alleged that well-organised prostitution and drugs businesses are going on in Calangute area with the blessings of local BJP MLA and Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo.

In a press conference at Congress House, Mulla came down heavily on the BJP MLA form the coastal belt saying: “Micheal Lobo had once said that he will give the names of those running drugs business to Chief Minister, but till date he has not done so.”

He informed that police have rescued 138 victims from prostitution in the Calangute area over the last six years and booked around 53 cases.

“This indicates that prostitution is on the rise in this part of Goa,” he said.

Mulla also criticised Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and the home department for inaction. “Once the CM had used the State machinery to put an end to prostitution in Baina area, but now he is going soft on the business running in Calangute area.”

The prostitution business is now well-organised as social media is widely used to run it. A hub of Nigerians has been set up in Calangute area, he said, adding that the local MLA is supporting those running the rackets.

Mulla also demanded suspension of Public Works Department engineer from Sankhali area who has given a written reply to local Congress block president that roads can only be repaired after the rainy season gets over.

Potholes on Sankhali and Valpoi roads are creating a problem for the people and the government officials are insensitive.

People will face problem during the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, he said, and demanded that these roads should be repaired

immediately.
