PORVORIM
Despite excess rainfall this year, residents in several parts of Porvorim constituency have been hit by acute water shortage and despite repeated requests, the PWD has been unable to address the grievances of residents.,
While Porvorim constituency comprises the villages of Salvador do Mundo, Socorro and Penha-de-Franca, the western side of Porvorim plateau falls in Saligao constituency.
There has been a sharp rise in construction activities, especially large residential complexes in the three villages in the last decade, while several government institutions and commercial establishments have established base in Porvorim constituency.
According to sources in the PWD (water supply), the present water requirement of Porvorim plateau is about 16 MLD but receives only 13 MLD of water.
With huge residential complex of 500 flats coming up and other constructions either in progress or likely to be completed soon, many in Porvorim have been left wondering how the PWD intends to provide water supply to the hundreds of new residents, especially since the present water supply is unable to cater to the existing population.
Considering the future requirements of Porvorim and surrounding areas, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte had proposed a water treatment plant at Porvorim.
Work on a 15 MLD water treatment plant began in June 2019 and was to have be completed within a year.
“Work on this water treatment plant has come to a standstill. A pumping station with four 300 HP pumps has been constructed near Hotel Green Park at Guirim and a separate pipeline to transport Tillari water from Guirim to the water reservoir at Porvorim was also laid,” said a source.
