HC asks State govt for details on 2022 MBBS recruitment at GMC

Govt told to submit records by October 9; admissions to continue under Supreme Court stay

PANAJI

The High Court of Bombay at Goa has asked the State government to provide full details of the 2022 recruitment at Goa Medical College (GMC) following a PIL that alleged irregularities in the process.

The petition claims there was deliberate mismanagement in the recruitment drive. The court has fixed the next hearing for October 9 and asked the government to place all documents and clarifications on record before that date.

Last month, in another case filed by an MBBS aspirant, the High Court struck down clause 5.7 of the prospectus issued by the Director of Technical Education. The clause had reserved 3 per cent seats for children of Central/State government employees and private sector workers for MBBS and other degree courses. The court held that the clause violated Article 14 of the Constitution as it was not based on a clear classification and had no link to the objective of admission on merit.

The Supreme Court has admitted appeals against this decision. It has said that the stay on the High Court order will allow the State to continue admissions this year under the existing prospectus, but these admissions will be subject to the final outcome of the appeals.
