HC declines to hear govt’s tiger plea after SC hearing

PANAJI
The Bombay High Court at Goa on Wednesday declined to grant the State government the two weeks it sought to reply to the Goa Foundation’s plea seeking that contempt notices be issued to the State for failing to notify a tiger reserve within the time stipulated by the High Court.

“The Goa government was seeking two weeks in order to wait for the Supreme Court to hear the matter first. However, the High Court declined and posted the matter for Monday and asked the State to file its reply to the petition on that date,” Adv Norma Alvares, who represented the Goa Foundation, said.

The Advocate General, told the Court that, while the tiger reserve was yet to be notified, the State government had complied with other directions issued in the order and sought time to brief the court about the compliances with respect to the order.

The Advocate General also told the Court that they have filed an appeal before the Supreme Court which is to be heard in the second week of November.

The High Court posted the matter on Monday during which it will hear both the Goa Foundation, which is seeking orders of contempt against the Goa government as well as the State government’s application for extension of time.
