Valpoi police Head Constable Rupesh Malik has been suspended after being accused of repeatedly demanding money from Honda panchayat member Deepak Gaonkar.

Gaonkar was assaulted by a migrant two days ago, after which police registered a case against two company employees and arrested them. However, Malik, who was handling the case, allegedly kept calling Gaonkar and pressuring him to pay at least Rs 10,000. The matter came to light after the information went viral on social media, sparking public anger.

The Superintendent of Police has ordered Malik’s suspension. A wireless message has been issued, with a formal order expected on Monday.

Locals claimed Malik had been posted at the Honda police post for several years and was known for demanding money from people seeking justice. Complaints had been filed earlier, but no action was taken until now. His suspension has been welcomed by residents, who also demanded the transfer of other long-serving officers at the post.

Gaonkar said he was harassed for money even after being beaten, but expressed relief that action had finally been taken.
