According to reports, after receiving the information, Sanguem Police team led by PSI Sudin Redkar rushed to the spot. As the head was chopped off and the body was charred beyond recognition, it was not possible to identify the deceased. During the combing of the area, the police team found a pair of slippers and a cap at the crime scene.
The villagers suspect that the body is that of a man from the same locality, who is reported to be missing since Friday evening.
According to sources, a villager said his aunt had called him on Saturday morning informing that her husband was not at home and all the efforts made by her to contact him went in vain. When the villager reached at his aunt's residence at about 9.30 am, his aunt told him that she had gone to her relatives place on Friday and when she reached home late in the evening she found that her husband was not at home.
The villager said his aunt assumed that her husband must have gone to Fatorpa for the annual Zatra and since her husband did not return by Saturday morning, she called her nephew (villager) on his mobile phone.
Thinking that his uncle might have gone to his shop, the villager went to check but the shop was found locked. On returning back, his aunt informed him that his chopper was not in the house. Suspecting that he must have gone to the cashew plantation, which is barely 500 mtrs from his residence, he went there and saw the cashew plantation on fire.
Sources added that the villager saw some dogs wandering and when he went to the spot to check, he was shocked to see a charred body.
Narrating the incident, he said he immediately called his brother as the head of the body was chopped off and was burnt and the it was beyond recognition.
The villager further said that in the surrounding area he found a cap, which was worn by his uncle and in another location slippers which were worn by him everyday. The matter was reported to Sanguem Police.
The villager and his family believe that it is cold-blooded murder and they are suspecting a person from the village for the murder.
According to PSI Sudin Redkar, no missing complaint was registered at Sanguem Police Station and the charred body is that of an unknown male person with head chopped off. "We have also recovered slippers and a cap from the crime scene. The body was sent to GMC Hospital, where post-mortem will be conducted and then the body will be preserved for further investigation," said Redkar.
