Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Wednesday pledged to strengthen mental health services across Goa’s rural belt. Speaking at a programme held at the Goa Medical College, Rane said the government is committed to tackling stress, depression, and related conditions with wider outreach and stronger support systems.

Officials present included Health Director Dr Rupa Naik, GMC Dean Dr Jayaprakash Tiwari, Dr Abhijit Nadkarni, Dr Sandesh Madkaikar, and Vikram Patel of Sangath NGO.

Rane emphasised that mental health remains a priority for the department and highlighted initiatives already underway.

One such programme is Impress, run in partnership with an NGO, which provides counseling at primary health centers.

Rane said the initiative has helped many patients recover from depression. He also pointed to the Tele Manas helpline, which continues to offer vital assistance to those seeking support.

The minister acknowledged that stigma remains a barrier.

“Even today, many people hide their mental health problems because it is still considered shameful. More awareness is needed to eliminate this misconception,” he said.

Plans include training more counselors, expanding the helpline service, and considering financial assistance for mental health professionals. Rane assured that the government will work actively to ensure services reach villages and remote areas.

The announcement reflects a growing recognition of mental health challenges in Goa, where experts have long called for stronger infrastructure outside urban centers.

Name change for IPHB under
consideration to address stigma

PANAJI:

IPHB is providing good mental health services to patients. However, even today there is a somewhat negative mindset regarding the name of this institution. Due to this, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane explained that changing the name of this institution is under consideration.
