Incessant rain since Wednesday morning inundated several parts of Mapusa city.
Several city roads experienced water logging, inconveniencing motorists and pedestrians alike due to the steady downpour during the entire day.
The Mapusa fire station received at least half a dozen calls pertaining to trees fallen on roads and power lines in various parts of Bardez.
A late evening three-hour torrential rain flooded key roads “ Usapkar junction in Khorlim and Duler junction in the city.
Till late in the evening, The Goan received calls of water entering in people’s homes from different areas of the city.
Locals said water entered in business premises and residential homes in Khorlim. Water rushed inside the stationary shop of Audumbar Karekar, at Usapkar junction and a popular flour mill in Khorlim.
“Rainwater entered inside the residential homes in Amuli-vaddo in Khorlim, a ward belonging to outgoing MMC chairperson, Rohan Kavlekar,” said Sanjay Bharde of Khorlim.
According to Bharde, water from all the drains from the hill side in Khorlim was released in the main nullah, which overflowed resulting in the flooding of the junction.
The Mapusa civic body came under severe criticism for its unplanned and half-baked pre-monsoon works in the city.
“Every year, the municipal council carries out clearing of drains and nullahs. This year the work was outsourced for several lakhs of rupees. Citizens continue to suffer. All the money has gone down the drains,” said Mahesh Rane of Khorlim.
