Torrential rains pounding the Western Ghats region have disrupted traffic between Belagavi and Goa.

Heavy rains in the Chorla ghat section since Tuesday morning led to poor visibility among motorists along the Kankumbi-Chorla section of the route.

Traffic in the region was badly affected and motorists said they had to stop their vehicles as road was not visible.

While the road in Chorla Ghat towards the Goa side is in very bad shape, motorists and commuters are now reluctant preferred to travell between Goa and Belagavi, fearing heavy rains in the next couple of days.

“The rains kept pounding our vehicles and we couldn’t see the road ahead. It was for the first time in our lives we witnessed such torrential rains in this region. We had to wait for over an hour as we were afraid of landslides, uprooting of trees, etc. along the route,” said a motorist who travelled to Belagavi from Goa.

According to villagers, this sudden burst of rains inundated the highway and also damaged the road.
