Heavy rains and high tide led to a sharp rise in water level and caused massive flooding in parts of Merces Vaddo at Vaddem-Vasco on Friday morning.
Several houses were flooded due to a rise in water level in the low-lying area of Merces Vaddo which is near the sea.
Despite the entire nullah between Chaferan and Merces Waddo recently being de-silted as part of pre-monsoon works, there was no respite for residents in the area.
Several residents had to face extreme hardships and inconvenience, prompting ward councillor Catharina Xavier to seek assistance from the office of Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho.
The staff at Godinho's office pressed a JCB into service and engaged workers to clear any blockage that may have developed in the area and help the flow of water into the sea. The water level later subsided in the afternoon and people heaved a sigh of relief.
Speaking to media persons, Caitan Xavier, social worker and son of the local councillor, said the low-lying area and a sudden change in tide had caused the floods.
A resident, Santosh Nerkar, however, alleged that the de-silting works were an eyewash.
