Hic! ‘Dry’ São João unlikely to affect hotel business

As soon as the news poured in that June 24, which happens to be the day for São João festivities, will be a dry day on account of panchayat elections scheduled on June 25, there were apprehensions that hotels will lose a great deal of business, but sources informed this paper that dry São João is unlikely to have any impact on hotel trade.

Traditionally, São João, which is the feast of St John the Baptist, is celebrated with much joy and merriment in Goa, as people drink, dance and even jump into the wells. Over the years, some hotels had started inviting locals to have a party by even offering their swimming pools to jump in.  
It was believed that this would help hotels in making some money in June, which is off-season month.   
Simon Fernandes, general manager, Marquis Beach Resort, said, “Dry São João will not result in any significant drop in business for hotels, as even earlier, hotels have not been successful in making a good business proposition out of it.”  
He continued, “The cost of inviting a group of locals and giving them a swimming pool just for a day is much more than the revenue a hotel earns from it. Due to this, hotels, which had started this trend many years ago, too have stopped celebrating this fest. There are one or two hotels, which still do it,

7 MLAs ready to make way for Parrikar

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will take a decision on which constituency he will contest from to get elected as an MLA, said Bharatiya Janata Party State President Vinay Tendulkar on Friday.
