High-voltage drama at Bicholim police station between chain-snatcher and men-in-uniform

Accused manhandles cops and points gun at them during custodial probe

PANAJI
It was a high-voltage drama at the Bicholim police station when a chain-snatching accused, arrested just a day ago, showed unbelievable strength during custodial interrogation when he not only manhandled the men-in-khaki but also pointed a gun at them.

The 24-year-old accused, Faizan Sayyad might have confessed to committing a series of thefts but could not keep his calm when some policemen allegedly assaulted him in custody.

A reliable source told The Goan that the situation escalated further when a senior officer purportedly brandished his official revolver at Sayyad. Although it’s unclear whether it was a real gun, the accused managed to wrestle control and point the gun at the cop. Somehow the policemen managed to bring him under control, averting what could have resulted in a law and order crisis within the very police station.

He now faces a fresh First Information Report (FIR) registered under section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of IPC. More details are however awaited as the department is tight-lipped on the issue.

On Tuesday, a joint team of the Crime Branch and Bicholim police arrested him while he attempted to snatch a gold mangalsutra from a woman.

The Curtorim youth, involved in as many as 10 cases of chain snatching and thefts, was apprehended when he was moving in the Navelim-Surla area on a Pulsar motorcycle with his associate, in an attempt to commit the crime. However, the rider escaped, leaving behind Sayyad.

During his initial questioning, he confessed to the police his involvement in a snatching incident that occurred on July 27 at Mulgao in Bicholim, as well as other FIRs.

Sources further revealed that when he was taken to his residence for investigation, one of his family members created a chaotic situation, as a result of which the investigation team had to return to the PS.
