Former Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte inaugurated a Hindu crematorium at Matovwada in Britona which has been constructed by the PWD at a cost of Rs 1.90 crore.
Penha da Franca Sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar, Dy Sarpanch Manisha Naik, panch members Sham Kamat, Shalu Gupta, Salvador do Mundo panch members Sandeep Salgaonkar, Vijay Dalvi, Sandeep Manjrekar and ZP member Kavita Naik were present on the occasion.
Addressing a gathering, Khaunte said the old crematorium was very small with hardly any facilities.
“There has been a substantial rise in population at Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo, resulting in the need for a new crematorium. The new crematorium has been built on 3,100 sq. metres of land and is equipped with all facilities,” said Khaunte.
“Since crematorium is located on the border of Penha de Franca and Salvador do Mundo, it will benefit residents of both villages.”
He advised the panchayats to take the initiative and constitute a committee to ensure the maintenance of the crematorium.
“The committee can charge those who can afford a nominal fee for the use of crematorium, so that the revenue can be use to maintain the crematorium, while those who are poor can use the crematorium free of cost.”
Stating that the approach road to the crematorium has been widened, Khaunte said he had also made a hearse van and mobile morgue available to residents for final rites of their near and dear ones.
