capital, but like the previous years, the vendors have no dedicated space to sell their produce other than doing business on the city's drains and open spaces.
The much-sought after juicy mesh melons, besides locally grown vegetables are all on displace cum sale in the city.
In fact, dozens of vendors from areas such as Barcem, Morpil
la in Quepem taluka have descended in the city with the produce grown in the hilly regions.
Given that the season's first produce, including the mesh melons have arrived in the market, many a customer said the vendors are quoting the price on a higher side, but exuded confidence that the rates will come down in the coming days.
Sadly, these vendors from the hilly areas of these two taluka are still awaiting the promise made by the BJP government around 2002 to provide them a dedicated space in the city, where they can come and sell their seasonal produce without inviting action from the Municipal workers or police personnel.
In the absence of a dedicated space, the vendors have made their presence felt around the old bus stand and along the drain opposite the Margao district police headquarters.
"We are helpless. Since there's no dedicated space in the city for the traditional vendors, we have no option than to sell the produce in the open space, along road sides and on drains", remarked a woman vendor.
These vendors not only face the brunt of the Municipal workers, but by their rival vendors doing business in the markets.
A year ago, vendors from the SGPDA retail market had targeted the vendors from the hilly areas for selling their produce along the roadside near the Ravindra Bhavan on the plea that their presence has adversely affected their business.
