In a major demolition drive, the State administration razed 55 houses and two religious structures in a five-hour operation at Baina-Vasco on Tuesday morning.

One house belonging to Augusto Fernandes was spared as he was granted a stay on submission of relevant documents.
The demolition drive began at 7.30 am and ended by 12.30 pm. A 272-strong police force, comprising the DySP, police inspectors, PSIs, and lady police constables from various police stations in South Goa, was deployed at the site to maintain l
aw and order.
Traffic police were also present to ensure smooth movement of trucks with the debris after the demolition drive. All the structures were razed with the help of JCBs and about 100 labourers. Fire tenders and ambulance were also present near the site of demolition.
According to sources, a team of doctors and nurses with primary medical equipment and medicines were kept on standby for any medical emergency during the demolition.
The structures, which were served demolition notices, were razed peacefully without any untoward incident.
The electricity department was directed to disconnect the power supply of all the structures at 6.30 am. Most of the occupants evacuated the houses on their own and moved to safer locations by about 7 am, while some had already shifted to other
rented premises on Monday night.
Ward Councillor Murari Bandekar, Mormugao DySP Lawrence D'Souza, Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo, Mamlatdar Satish Prabhu, Deputy Collector Mahadev Arondekar, Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes were among the government authorities present during
the operation.
"The demolition of the 55 houses is as per schedule. We will demolish all these houses and also demolish small illegal tiny structures that have come up there," CO Agnelo Fernandes told the media.
Confirming that authorities were clearing structures that had sprung up on private land, Fernandes added: "These structures were there over a period of time and had mushroomed all over
the place."
